Our annual RUN3rd 5k is a chance to bring the community together to support our young runners and raise money for RUN3rd Alliance. It’s also a chance for the students in our after-school running programs to celebrate all they have accomplished throughout the school year.
Registration is still open for the Virtual 5k in Bella Vista, Arkansas on September 18, 2020.
Not a runner? You can also donate to our scholarship fund and sponsor a young runner who cannot afford the registration fees.
What is RUN3rd?
RUN3rd is an inspirational Twitter campaign, a global movement sharing dedications made on behalf of people’s loved ones, causes and ideas. It was started by actor, activist and avid long distance runner Sean Astin in January 2012, and has grown to encompass hundreds of runners, walkers and others around the globe who have taken its meaning and mission into their hearts.
#RUN3rd Mission Statement
Why do I run?
I’ve been long distance running for 25 years. It is one of the most rewarding physical activities imaginable. It is hard. It is painful and it is fun. It confers legitimacy on my day. It makes me feel alive. Simply stated, I love running and I love running far. Above all else, running is selfish. Therefore…
1st I run for me
My family waits for me. My family listens to my stories from the road. My family has faith in me. My family loves me, trusts me and depends on me. My family is patient. My family is strong. Therefore…
2nd I run for my family
While running is in many ways about solitude, I rarely run alone. My thoughts are always with me. My hopes, my fears, my dreams, they come along too. From start to stop I yearn to understand the greater meaning of my journey. With every beat of a runner’s heart, with every pounding step, life itself is affirmed. And so, it costs nothing, yet can mean everything for any runner, for me, to make a simple dedication, to say that these steps I am taking are not mine to own. It means something to me to declare that because I am alive and I care for others…

So why the RUN3rd 5k?
Like Sean, we’re avid runners too. We use running as a way to stay active, make time for ourselves and to take some time to clear our thoughts, akin to meditation in some respects. While we know that running is often a solo endeavor, we wouldn’t be able to do it without help, encouragement, and sometimes, sacrifices from our families. Traveling to races, postponing dinner while mom or dad get a quick run in, or waking up your spouse accidentally when trying to slip out for a few miles before sunrise- all of these cause your family to be a part of your running. And there are few things better than having the support of your family when you finish a race triumphantly with a new personal record, or having them there to console you if things don’t go according to plan. To know that, while they may not understand why you’d want to run 20 miles on a perfectly good Saturday morning, they’ll still be your cheerleader when you come back home provides an immeasurable boost to your training. It’s also important for us to realize that there are folks out there who aren’t able to throw on their shoes and just run. Perhaps it’s a friend who is having medical issues, or people across the country who are dealing with a community tragedy … Dedicating your run to something greater than yourself can turn a seemingly routine run into a truly introspective experience.
So here we are, taking Sean’s message and, figuratively and literally, running with it. We’re holding this event to spread the idea of RUN3rd, and to get runners to come together for a fun morning of running, walking and socializing. Through the first 5 years, we have been able to donate over $50,000 to after-school run programs because of this event – we can’t thank you enough for the support you are giving our young runners! We look forward to sharing the gift of running with a new generation, and hope they take the message of RUN3rd to heart. We’re excited to share the day with you and appreciate your interest in our event!
